“leave it out to dry”

screenprint and piecework with dyed cotton on canvas stretcher; 2018

Depicting the text and symbolism of what it means to be "left out to dry" or "hang me out to dry." This is in relation to the notion that multiple things can be true at once, and how the binary is harmful in most aspects of my life.

Advocating for community art as fine art/high art, and myself as both a butch lesbian and genderqueer person, both navigator and destroyer of the cripplingly individualistic and capitalist nature of fine arts practice, is exhausting and lonely. Through my process of piecing, dying, printing I act on the gray area between quilt and painting, receiving help, and figuring it out on my own - taking note of where I am protected and supported and by whom.
